That cookie is set as HTTP-only (not readable by page scripts), with a SameSite restriction of Lax, and as Secure when the site is served over HTTPS.
What the session may hold, depending on what you do:
- A security token used to check that forms were submitted from this website (CSRF protection)

- An administrator id, if you log in to the admin area
The session cookie is set when you visit public pages because those pages start a session so that forms (including anonymous submission and reporting) can be protected. You do not have to create an account for that cookie to be used.

Essential versus non-essential
